Billy Mays, Hannah Montana, Kanye and Geico Winners in Halloween Survey

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

Last week, we conducted a Halloween survey to determine this year’s costume trends and which brands could benefit from creating a licensed costume.  Our survey was featured in both The Examiner and NY Sports Journalism.  Enjoy the results and our thoughts below.

Which celebrity’s mistake could make for the best Halloween costume this year?

  • - 17% Kanye West
  • - 15% Michael Jackson
  • - 12% Jon & Kate Gosselin

Coming off the heels of his shocking interruption of Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech during this year’s MTV VMA’s, Kanye West is expected to be this year’s biggest villain. Given general public sentiment, we don’t expect him to become the face of a brand anytime soon.  Others suggested that Michael Jackson costumes would be popular given his recent death and the release of his music documentary, This Is It.

What licensed kid’s character will be the most popular Halloween costume this year?

  • - 22% Hannah Montana
  • - 13% Dora the Explorer
  • - 9% Where the Wild Things Are

No surprise that Hannah Montana ranks number one among kid’s characters given the success of this past spring’s release of both Hannah Montana: The Movie and an official motion picture soundtrack. Disney has done a great job leveraging the character/property’s extreme popularity with children.  Dora the Explorer is another fan favorite, even after Nickelodeon and Mattel announced she would be getting a controversial makeover with a more fashionable, older look due for release this fall

Pitchman Billy Mays in his famous Oxi-Clean spots

Which brand’s character/spokesman would win a Halloween costume contest?

  • - 14% said Billy Mays
  • - 13% said Geico Caveman
  • - 7% said Geico Gecko

In the Brand Character/ Spokesman category, master pitchman, Billy Mays continues to be a popular figure after his untimely June death. His son, Billy Mays III, has decided to host a “Hallow-Clean Contest,” which asks people to send in pictures of themselves dressed as his famed OxyClean spots on Halloween- I’m sure the OxyClean brand is glad to get the extra coverage.  Geico has claimed the second and third spot with their Cavemen and Gecko.  The insurance company has done a great job branding themselves, with one in every five consumers mentioning a Geico spokesman.

What reality TV star should have their own costume?

  • - 15% Jon & Kate Gosselin
  • - 9% Kate Gosselin
  • - 7% Jon Gosselin

The battle between Jon and Kate Gosselin will live on this October 31st, as just about everyone that voted in this category suggested that either the duo or individual reality stars would appear as the most popular reality costume idea. Reality boyfriend Spencer Pratt of The Hills fame beat out wife Heidi Montag to clinch the fourth spot in our survey, while rap icon Flava Flav that made waves most recently with his hit VH1 show “Flavor of Love“, rounded out the bottom of the list.

PS- Happy Halloween!
